NBA betting trends as 2020 Resumes after Covid 19

Can streaks and trends that were money makers before Covid 19 continue after Covid 19?

The NBA season is slated to resume July 30 in Orlando in freakish new format with one location and no fans. Does the lack of a home court and the lack of cheering fans affect how teams will perform and will it affect how oddsmakers set the lines?

We scanned the first days of the resumed NBA schedule for a few NBA betting trends that were popular earlier in the season. You can decide which ones might stand the test of virus time.

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Utah JazzTrend Report

Trend: BET OVER the total, whatever the total is

This is a weird one. The last 13 times the Pelicans played on a Thursday, the game went OVER. And the Pels are the ‘home’ team here, which produces another pattern – when the Jazz play at New Orleans, the OVER is 12-1 the past 13 seasons. Sometimes, you don’t ask why and just make the bet….

LA Lakers vs LA ClippersTrend Report

Trend: Bet the Clippers to win on moneyline, bet the Lakers to cover if they are underdogs

In the ‘old says,’ a Los Angeles Lakers vs Los Angeles Clippers matchup was a one-sided beatdown. But since well before Kobe Bryant’s retirement, the Clippers jumped ahead of the Lakers. And then as LeBron became a Laker and Kawhi Leonard and Paul George became Clippers, suddenly they were co-favorites to win the title.

Since Nov. 2, 2012, the Lakers are just 6-24 SU against the Clippers. And three of those wins came in the last two seasons. The outcome was better against the spread (12-18 ATS) but still nothing to write home about or to fill up the betting wallet.

The Lakers-Clippers ‘home’ court situation here is irrelevant, since they have the same home court in Staples Center. The Lakers are ‘home’ in this game, which makes the trend 1-11 SU the last 12 times this scenario has emerged. And if the Lakers are underdogs, they were 10-1 ATS in 11 games as dogs pre-Covid.

Boston Celtics vs Milwaukee BucksTrend Report

Trend: Celtics to cover as underdog

Two East contenders lock up here with the Bucks likely to be favored and facing a team that bites hard as an underdog. The Bucks struggled ATS as a favorite leading up to March Break, going just 2-4 ATS over six games. The Celtics meanwhile were riding a nice 13-4-1 ATS in 18 recent games when getting points.

Houston Rockets vs Dallas Mavericks – Trend Report

Trend: Bet UNDER

Historically, matchups between these Texas rivals played in Dallas go UNDER. This game obviously isn’t in Dallas but Dallas is the ‘home’ team. The past 10 times the Rockets have visited, the game went UNDER. The Mavs ranked 7th in 3-point defensive percentage during the season and if they can slow down the three-ball barrage, this one could easily go UNDER.
