Hockey betting has gotten more sophisticated as bettors gain access to more information and better statistical data. This knowledge equips bettors to find edges and NHL betting trends that help them win more often.

Home and road patterns, travel and fatigue considerations, power play vs penalty kills ratios – they all add up to form a reliable picture of how a game might play out. So we mine teams trends, goalie trends via our database, matchup trends and over-under trends. Learn more about what we do and how we do it, then use the information to make more informed and wise NHL bets this season.

NHL Team Trends

Some teams always win at home and hardly ever win on the road. Why? Some teams seem to never be able to win when playing back to back games, while other teams thrive in a situation where they should be fatigued. Why? Do NHL betting trends hold up over several years or do they change with the seasons, with players and coaches?

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a talented squad and a terrific goalie in the 2019-2020 season. But in nine games before Covid-19 interrupted the season, they had played nine times with no rest (the second of back to back nights) and won none of them. Most of those games were road games, but even so.

The Washington Capitals had been a terrific wager as road underdogs in the same season, going 10-4 dating back to the previous year. What made them such a threat to win as an underdog? We gather and update NHL team trends every day.

NHL Game Trends

You only get this situation twice a year because of the NHL East-West schedule, but be very careful about betting the Philadelphia Flyers against the San Jose Sharks. Between February 2004 and the 2020 season, the teams had played 23 times, with the Flyers winning just four times. And since 1998, the Chicago Blackhawks have played 16 regular season games in Philly. Guess how many times they won? Zero. What’s going on there?

And talk about streaky activity, check out Montreal and Toronto head to head history. Ending the 2019-2020 season, the Habs had won four straight vs the Leafs. Before that, the Leafs had won seven in a row vs the Habs. Before that, the Habs had won 14 in a row against the Leafs. So which NHL trend starts or ends the next time they play?

NHL League-Wide Trends

League trends are more difficult to pin down. But learning how road underdogs of +200 or more perform in general can be a great handicapping tool to look for those angles. Same story when a total is very high or very low. Does the OVER usually prevail when the total is low at 6.5? Is the UNDER typically a good bet if the total is high at 11.5?

We will be mining these NHL betting trends as the site evolves in the coming months, so stay tuned and watch the Twitter feed for announcements of new features in the future.
